Show full transcript 1:30 My name is Pat Rogers and that's Connor McCarthy. 1:33 On our last episode, Brian Draper had just led police to a shocking videotape that he 1:39 and Tori Adamczyk had made. 1:41 We're going to go deep into that tape on this episode and much more. 1:45 But I think it would be a good idea to just to go back and reset and show the 1:50 beginning of this tape, a clip that Brian had made on September 22nd inside 1:56 Pocatello High School. It's a shot of the camera, POV, Brian holding it, walking 2:03 down the hallway. You see a student off in the distance, a row of lockers. As you 2:09 get closer, you realize it's Cassie. 2:20 Oh, Kassie. 2:23 I'm getting you on tape, okay? 2:26 Say hi, please. 2:28 Okay, see ya. 2:31 Wait, have you seen Tori? 2:35 He's supposed to meet me here at 7.30, and it's 8.19. 2:40 He's an hour late. 2:43 You don't even care, do you? 2:47 Kassie doesn't reply to Brian's question. 2:49 She just shrugs and half smiles moving on with her day 2:54 Imagine 2:56 Detectives all in a single room watching this for the first time 3:00 Seeing Cassie living breathing alive going to school at her locker changing out books 3:07 Brian Draper spins around 3:10 Almost taunting her yeah, and her friend her friend time stamp September 22nd 829 a.m 3:17 She will be murdered 10 hours later. 3:21 And it's Brian Draper behind the camera. 3:24 The one who said he had nothing to do with it. 3:26 Tori did everything. 3:29 So they continue making this tape throughout the day. 3:32 Here's another clip from it. 3:34 This is around 12 p.m. 3:38 Assuming this is lunchtime. 3:39 They're still in school. 3:40 They are in the library. 3:42 They've set the camera on the table. 3:44 They're both talking to it. 3:45 They're in a corner almost whispering through. 3:47 It's a little hard to hear. 3:48 because they don't want anyone else to hear what their plan is. 4:16 So this is a different version of Brian. 4:18 Yeah, he's talking directly to Cassie's family. I'm sorry. She has to die. We've chosen our victim 4:25 We know she's gonna be home alone 4:28 Everything he said in his confession is right out the window right out the window. Yeah 4:33 He is now appearing as 4:35 the leader of the pack 4:43 Okay, this is the plain meaning of the tape. We know what happened. We know he was there 4:48 at least when it happened. But is there still some possibility that this is just part of 4:54 the big scare? 4:55 Right. We know they're horror film buffs. Are they making some kind of found footage 5:00 horror film? That's popular at this time. So is Brian playing a part? Is this a fantasy 5:07 And that, as he said in the confession, 5:11 Tori went after her. 5:12 So, did Tori, was he planning something 5:14 that Brian wasn't planning? 5:17 Did it get out of hand? 5:18 Now, this next clip comes after they left Cassie and Matt 5:25 at the house where Cassie was house sitting. 5:27 Just to give it a little context, 5:30 Brian and Tori had gone over to the house 5:32 with Cassie and Matt on Friday night. 5:34 They had played around on a wait machine in the basement. 5:38 They had gotten something to eat. 5:40 They watched a movie. 5:43 What Cassie and Matt didn't know 5:44 is when they were in that house, they were casing it. 5:48 And this next clip displays that. 5:50 Time stamp of 9.54 p.m. the night of Cassie's murder. 5:56 Brian says, 5:57 We're here in his car, the time is 9.50, September 22nd, 2006. 6:10 Unfortunately, we have the grueling task of killing our two friends. 6:16 And they are right in that house, just down the street. 6:20 We just talked to them, we were there for an hour. 6:24 We checked out the whole house, we know there's lots of doors, there's lots places to hide. 6:31 I unlocked the back doors, that's all unlocked, now we just gotta wait and yeah, we're really 6:42 nervous right now but you know, we're ready. 6:44 It was like you said, it was to case the house, look for different ways, different 6:50 points of entry, how are we gonna get in, how are we gonna get out, how are they 6:53 not going to be aware of what we're really planning. 6:56 The fact that they go out and they're now documenting 6:59 this plan, laying it out, and this is where we were, 7:02 this is what we're doing right now, 7:04 here's the plan, and this is what's going to happen. 7:06 There's one more piece that I want to play 7:07 from this section of the tape. 7:10 We waited for this for a long time. 7:13 A long time. 7:14 We'll stay tuned. 7:16 So it might have been a little hard to hear. 7:18 Brian said we've waited for this for a long time. 7:21 Stay tuned. 7:39 Today I want to tell you about our friends at Layla Sleep. 7:42 We cover a lot of difficult stories on this show, some that might make it hard to sleep 7:46 at night, but Layla makes one of the best mattresses on the market and also one of the 7:50 most affordable. He never turns the camera to Tori who's driving he never turns the camera to himself 11:46 It's seemingly a black frame. Yeah, they're two different energies in the car 11:53 Yeah, Brian is you almost can like see him shaking because the adrenaline is rushing through his voice 11:59 Oh, it's like rushing to get the words, but there's there's an elation to it 12:05 Tori is 12:07 You know, he says, you know, I'm shaking but he's calm play that part again. Let's play this again 12:12 Just killed Cassie. We just left her house. This is not a joke 12:16 I stabbed her in the throat and I saw her life this body just 12:22 Disappeared dude. I just killed Cassie 12:27 That fell like 12:28 I mean it was so fast 12:31 What's up, we gotta get our app straight. 12:34 Torey sounds like he has a plan or something. 12:36 Stick with the plan and it's hard to hear 12:39 but what Brian says before he hits stop is, 12:43 okay, let's go get our movie tickets. 12:44 Go get our movie tickets. 12:45 There's the alibi, there's the plan, which they don't do. 12:48 They don't do. 12:49 We talked about that in an earlier episode. 12:51 We should just catch everybody up again 12:53 is that the alibi was after we left Cassie and Matt 12:57 we went to see a movie called Pulse. 13:00 And when questioned about the movie, 13:01 Brian didn't know anything about it. 13:03 He clearly didn't go to the movie. 13:04 But you hear him here say, let's go buy tickets. 13:06 We gotta go buy our movie tickets now. 13:09 So, you know, his contention and his confession 13:11 that, you know, this was all, 13:14 this is all gonna be just to scare her. 13:17 Doesn't make any sense now. 13:18 It's 11 45 p.m. 13:21 The movie is over at that point. 13:23 So it's almost as if they needed to, 13:26 and I don't wanna try to help them with their alibi, 13:27 but it's almost they should have when they left go buy the movie tickets and then someone sees you there 13:32 and then come back. One thing I don't want to belabor this piece of tape and Brian's section of 13:38 it but I think it's helpful to listen to it and understand it in context of the other bits of 13:45 Brian tape that we have. So let's just play this one more time and I know it's unpleasant as 13:52 It's an understatement, but let's listen to it. 13:55 I stabbed her in the throat and I saw her life, 13:58 this body just disappeared. 14:01 Dude, I just killed Cassie. 14:03 I stabbed her. 14:05 I saw, I, I, not Tori. 14:08 But now we have to put that next to what he's told police 14:12 in his interrogation. 14:13 And the first version of Brian Draper is, 14:16 I wouldn't say he's calm, 14:17 but at least in the beginning he's making sense. 14:20 He's got a story. 14:21 He's trying to wriggle out of this he didn't look like he was sweating bullets when he was sitting in that chair 14:28 Wait, that's the first time for the detectives to come into the room. He's absent-mindedly drumming. He's sitting there 14:34 He's he checks his wallet at one point looks at his cash why he needs to do that. That's fidgety Brian though 14:40 It's a little bit of that too 14:42 What would you say is your favorite movie of all all time a favorite movie would have to be 14:52 There's lots of choices 14:56 To be honest, I'd have to say Halloween is my favorite movie. 14:59 He's trying to snowball these detectives. 15:01 He's sitting at the table. 15:03 He's got his hands folded. 15:05 He's looking at Detective John Ganski. 15:08 He's answering his questions seemingly normal. 15:12 You know, the body language is not saying this is someone that had that memory of the 15:16 murder in his head as he's talking to two homicide detectives. 15:20 Then we go to his confession. 15:21 Right. 15:22 And that's version number two. 15:23 Yeah. 15:23 of Brian Draper. Sobbing, out of control, you know, riddled with remorse and guilt and it just got 15:31 out of hand. It wasn't my fault. It was Tori that did everything. 15:46 Now we have version number three of Brian Draper. 15:49 I'm sorry. I'm sorry Cassie's family, but she died in the morning. 15:56 Who? 15:57 When you see on that tape, seems like a determined killer. 16:03 The three Brian Drapers. 16:05 Obviously, Brian is arrested and charged with Cassie's murder. 16:09 And the police, the investigators, John Ganski, Andy Thomas, all of them, 16:15 they have all this information. 16:16 they have this tape, they have Brian's story. 16:21 They have the aftermath of Cassie's murder on tape. 16:25 They haven't even talked to Tori yet. 16:27 So this is all going in to their first on-camera interview 16:32 with Tori Adamczyk. 16:33 They have all this in their pocket. 16:35 And as far as we know, the Adamczyks knew nothing 16:39 about this. 16:40 They didn't know Brian was arrested. 16:41 They didn't know he confessed. 16:43 They don't know about the Black Rock Canyon evidence 16:46 that was collected and they don't know about the tape. 16:49 And I wanted to hear what Shannon, 16:52 Tori's mother, had to say about that. 16:53 And this is what she told me. 16:55 We go into the police station 16:56 and the police saying right away we're questioning him. 17:01 So he needs to answer these questions. 17:03 I definitely got worried during that point. 17:07 It's the first time Tori's really allowed 17:09 to speak about it or that Tori spoke about it 17:13 because at home, for those three days, 17:17 my whole thing was, he's grieving the loss of his friend. 17:21 All of these emotional reactions is the loss of his friend. 17:25 This is a terrible thing that happened. 17:28 You know, but never crossed my mind. 17:34 And I think I can speak for my husband, 17:36 never crossed his mind. 17:38 There's just no way. 17:38 Tori was not that kind of person. 17:40 So Tori Adamczyk arrives at the police station with his parents and just a 17:46 moment about Tori. He's probably a head shorter than Brian. He's you know just a 17:54 regular-looking 16-year-old kid. He's dressed in a in a t-shirt, jeans and 18:01 converse, chateaus, like every other high school student during that time. 18:05 And we're investigating on the site that Cassie stoddard was was murdered. You've known Cassie for how long? 18:14 From 10th grade. Okay. So you've known her for a little while? Yes. Okay. 18:20 So what is your relationship with Cassie? 18:23 Friends. 18:24 All right. 18:26 So she arrived there with 18:28 and what happens when you get there? 18:32 She, Cassie and Matt gave us a tour of the entire house. 18:36 So what they wanna do is hear his story, 18:38 knowing what the real story is. 18:41 So he starts off, and let's play this clip. 18:44 He almost immediately has a departure 18:47 from what Brian had said. 18:49 If you remember, Brian had said, 18:51 we left the house and we went to go see a movie, Pulse. 18:55 Here's what Tori said. 18:56 And then we went back upstairs and Matt, Brian, kept saying he had to go because we just had, 19:08 yeah, he said he was going to call his mom. And so we left, planning to go, we knew the 19:15 movie started at 10, but we never got around to going to that. Yeah, so that's where he veers 19:20 away from Brian Draper's story. 19:23 There's a theory that the detectives believe that the night of Brian Draper's interview 19:32 and he ended with, I did not kill my friend and I will gladly take a polygraph test. 19:38 He goes home. 19:39 Detective John Ganski theorized that after he got home at some point he snuck out that 19:45 night and they met at a local gas station down the street from the Draper's house. 19:49 Brian gave it up early as you recall it okay we're lying we're lying about the 19:53 movie because we pressed him then he re-scripted the story to say okay we were 19:58 burglarizing cars so I think after that interview he communicated with Tori 20:03 said by the way the story's changing he got it this is the story you got to 20:10 tell them they're not buying they're not buying the movie I ended it with I 20:17 were checking doors and we need to stick with that. So there you know the movie 20:21 theory is BS. So this is after Brian's first interview before he had come in 20:27 to take the polygraph but had confessed. So he had ended on just telling him 20:32 we're breaking into cars. And that is the last time Tori Adamczyk ever spoke 20:35 to Brian Draper on the outside. He has no idea that the next day Brian 20:41 confesses, takes him to where the evidence was buried, and then he's 20:46 quickly arrested and he is in jail. 20:49 Tori has no idea any of this has happened. 20:52 So it's 9.30, you guys decide you're gonna leave? 20:55 Yeah. 20:55 We backed up and we took the same route we got to get in 21:00 and we just parked right before the road off to get out 21:04 and we waited there for Valen. 21:07 We were scoping the neighborhood. 21:09 Why is we were planning to go through cars? 21:11 Now the detectives in the room, 21:13 They wanted to see how far he was willing to go with lying to them. 21:22 When you say go through cars, what do you mean? 21:24 Oh, see the ones that are open? We don't go through any with the arms or that are locked. 21:30 We just walk by, push the handle, and if it's open, we can still get gas money or change. 21:36 So, have you done that before? 21:38 Once this year and in ninth grade. 21:43 He's elaborating on the lie and detectives always like to see how far someone be willing 21:49 to go. 21:49 Here's what John Gansky said. 21:51 Tori seems confident. 21:53 He seems like he's maybe rehearsed the story a bit, so he feels comfortable with it, and 21:59 he feels like maybe we're buying it. 22:01 He has no idea that Brian's been arrested. 22:04 He doesn't know what we know at the time, so at this point he's just, he's sticking 22:09 with the story. 22:10 And a lot of times people in Tori Adamczyk's position say the more detail I offer, the more 22:17 believable this lie is going to be. 22:19 Embroidery. 22:20 Embroidery, yeah. 22:21 Yeah, but it's also the more detail you give on a lie, the harder it is to remember. 22:25 And you know who does remember, or the guys interrogating you, they are noticing everything. 22:30 So if you get locked into a story and you give a detail and they ask you to go through 22:35 a story again and that details out, you know, that's something for them, another 22:39 their thread to pull on. 22:41 What's different about Tori's interview 22:43 when they go into the room, 22:45 both Tori's parents are in the room with him. 22:47 Another set of parents that lets just get through this. 22:51 Our son didn't do anything. 22:52 There's no way he could have done this. 22:53 There's no way he could have done this. 22:55 Are we almost done? 22:56 We honestly are. 22:57 Okay, so then, because our son has to be picked up 23:00 and like, what if we finish? 23:02 Could we finish in like 10 minutes? 23:04 Well. 23:05 This means games probably over. 23:07 At one point during the interview, 23:09 Tori's mother, Shannon, had to leave to pick up. 23:13 Right, she had something to do. 23:14 To pick up their third child, their youngest son. 23:17 So it's just Tori with his father in the room. 23:21 Here's what John Ganski said. 23:23 There was an interruption during this period of time 23:26 where his mother had to leave the interview, 23:31 had to go pick up another child, 23:33 and it quite frankly kind of ruined our momentum 23:36 a little bit. And at that point in time, you know, we just basically told, confronted him, 23:41 just let Tori know that I don't believe you. 23:44 You know, I'm not here to insult you or anything, but we don't believe your story, 23:49 and we don't believe your story. And I don't think your dad thinks your story about going 23:52 through the cars. It's a tough one. And I don't believe it, especially because I know it's not 23:56 true. We got you going back into Cassie's house. 24:01 Tori, you know what we're going with this. You know what we have. 24:05 They had so much. 24:07 Why are we going to listen to this story from this kid? 24:11 They put the clamp down on him pretty quickly. 24:13 You know, he just basically told, and I think now's the time to come clean. 24:19 And you could tell that the wheels were turning. 24:22 When you looked into his eyes and you could see him, that he's thinking, do they really 24:27 know what they know? 24:28 And I truly believe he was getting ready to confess. 24:34 And then he played the card of saying, 24:37 I think I need to talk to my attorney. 24:39 He doesn't seem to be intimidated 24:42 in the situation that he is in. 24:44 Or the fact that his classmate had been murdered. 24:49 And even when they turn the heat on him, 24:54 he doesn't seem to fluctuate. 24:56 No, this is the the key part of his interview listen to this 25:04 We've got the knife that you used we've got the masks that you used we've got the videotape 25:11 We've got there's a table in there that you buried. Okay, try to catch on fire. Oh, that's 25:17 You know, you know, I don't need to tell you this is right Tori and what they're saying is true 25:21 So that was the voice of 25:26 Tori's father who had been in the room with him. Is this true and Tori says yes 25:31 Quietly says yes and a soft nod 25:34 That's as far as he went to his involvement in this case and then the interview shut down. Yeah 25:42 in an earlier episode we discussed the case of 25:46 of Norrie Jones, a murder victim in Pocatello, Idaho. 25:49 And we said at the time, remember that name, Norrie Jones, 25:52 because it's gonna figure into this case, and this is how. 25:55 Norrie Jones was murdered two years, 25:58 almost to the day that Cassie was murdered. 26:01 She was stabbed in basically the same way, 26:04 almost the same number of wounds. 26:06 It was like a blitz attack. 26:08 She was home alone, like Cassie. 26:10 So there are very eerie similarities 26:13 between these two murders. 26:15 And it was unsolved, of course, at the time of Cassie's murder. 26:19 Once they got on to Tory, and this is why we asked you to remember this name, Norrie Jones. 26:27 Once they got on to Tory, they realized that his house at the time where he was living, 26:33 at the time of the Norrie Jones murder, was very close to Norrie Jones' house. 26:39 The proximity of the atom checks, that just sort of fell into detective's laps. 26:44 When they saw that, of course all of them had to pause and say is this a possibility? 26:50 Could it be a possibility? 26:51 Nothing is too outlandish for what we know right now, what they've done, look at the tape, 26:57 look at the masks, look at the knives and look at the murder they committed. 27:01 So there was some initial speculation, suspicion that Tori, who at that time would have 27:06 been 14, this was two years before Cassie, had actually possibly murdered Nori Jones. 27:12 That was not the case. 27:14 The true killer, a guy named Brad Comfort, 27:18 was caught, tried, convicted, 27:19 and also sentenced to life in prison without parole. 27:23 So that's, you know, 27:24 Tory had absolutely nothing to do with that. 27:26 But police at the time had to at least consider it, 27:29 and they did. 27:29 Yeah, I talked to Detective John Gansky about that, 27:32 and he said, 27:33 welcome to investigating a crime. 27:36 Sometimes these things happen 27:38 that send you down these roads 27:39 that end up to be meaningless, 27:41 But these overlaps and these coincidences, 27:44 you have to look into them. 27:46 And that just happens. 27:47 And this was just a bizarre set of circumstances 27:51 of the timing, the unsolved, the victimology. 27:55 But for now, both Tory and Brian are 27:59 arrested and charged with Cassie's murder, 28:01 and they're in the same county jail. 28:04 I get into the police station, 28:05 and they had handcuffed Tory and arrested him 28:08 while I was gone. 28:09 and they tell us Brian's confessed, we have a videotape, they're going to be 28:17 arraigned tomorrow and I remember them telling me he's gonna be looking at 28:22 something like a 20-year prison sentence and I remember thinking he's 16. 28:30 Ryan Reynolds here from It Mobile. We drove up into our driveway 32:12 and the house was 32:15 Flooded with the place all over the house all over the yard 32:20 So, at that moment, I had no choice until her brother was involved in Cassie's murder. 32:29 And she freaked out. 32:32 It was the scariest thing. 32:37 I'll never forget it. 32:39 No. 32:39 She just kept saying, no, no, no, no. 32:44 She just flailed and she didn't want to think about it. 32:49 She didn't want to realize it. 32:51 she didn't want, she just wanted to go away. It devastated her. It took her childhood. She was 13. 33:02 You know, there's a hole here in this podcast and that is Cassie's family. I spoke to Anna 33:10 at length early on and interviewed her and she is not here in this podcast because she died 33:18 and she was more or less the best advocate for Cassie for the family. She 33:24 was her spokesperson and obviously she she couldn't be a part of this and that's 33:30 why there seems to be if there is a hole here that is it but I think if she 33:35 could respond to that she would say you know her sympathy would be 33:41 limited for the drapers and the atom checks. As deeply sorrowful as Kerry is 33:48 here there is no comparison. He said that it took his daughter's childhood. Well it also took 33:54 Cassie's future and I think that's you know kind of what we should remember. 33:59 The news of Brian and Tori's arrest like just pulverized Pocatello. I mean 16 year old girl 34:09 is murdered by two 16 year old classmates who were her friends. He was friends with her 34:14 friends with Cassie. It was it was a total shock to everyone. But what was 34:20 interesting when we talked to several of the students, former students, they 34:25 started to piece together the memories of where they were over that weekend to 34:30 that Monday morning. And Miranda, fellow classmate of Brian and Torey's, remembers 34:37 both Brian and Torey were at school that day and this is what she had to 34:42 I remember Brian being behind me in astronomy class that Monday morning and he was jittery. 34:50 He was anxious. 34:51 He was shaking my chair, you know. 34:53 There were baskets underneath of the desk at school and everybody put their feet on 34:57 there. 34:57 And then I don't know if it was anxiety, just bouncing. 35:01 I remember it pretty significantly. 35:04 And then the day after, he wasn't there. 35:10 So, I thought I was suspicious. 35:12 I really did at the time, but I didn't say anything. 35:16 Like, why all of a sudden is this person not here, you know? 35:19 They went to school that Monday morning, 35:21 they were sitting there as people were talking about, 35:24 people are grieving, people are in shock. 35:26 The killer was in the classroom. 35:28 I mean, it's right out of a Hollywood movie. 35:31 You know, what were they thinking? 35:33 What was going on in their heads 35:34 as they're watching the reaction 35:36 to the news of the murder 35:37 and also the investigation that's coming into the high school. 35:41 You know, you just said, you know, 35:43 it's sort of like something out of a horror movie, 35:45 like a teen horror movie 35:47 where the killers are in the school. 35:49 And a lot of ways it was, 35:51 they made a movie about it 35:53 and they also referenced a very popular 35:57 horror movie franchise, Scream. 35:59 You wanna die. 36:03 The day before Cassie's murder, 36:06 September 21st 8 38 p.m. Brian and Tori were driving around Pocatello at night 36:13 Brian has the camera and this is what they say 36:16 We're not gay. They were sick. Psychopaths did not get pleasure of killing other people 36:22 That sounds good, baby 36:23 We're gonna go down in history. We're gonna be just like Scream except real life terms 36:28 That sounds good, baby 36:30 Brian says, it's going to be just like scream, except in real life terms. 36:37 Just like scream. 36:39 Let's do 60 seconds on what scream is and how the horror film element continues to weave 36:45 itself into this case. 36:47 Scream came out in December of 1996, Cassie was killed in September of 2006, the 10-year 36:53 anniversary of this movie. 36:55 on the surface it's a it's a slasher movie but there was a flip with Scream 37:00 that it was meta before anyone knew what meta was it was self-aware of the tropes 37:07 yeah yeah it followed the tropes and throughout the movie one by one knife 37:14 wielding mass killer preying on high school students Brian and Tori were 37:20 obsessed with this movie. The opening scene of Scream is one of the most iconic, I 37:27 mean, I would say movie moments in film history. It's Drew Barrymore. She's home 37:33 alone and she's stalked and murdered by a mass killer. Her name in that movie was 37:39 Casey. Casey Cassie. Casey Cassie. Two letters off. We don't know if that had 37:47 anything to do with it if it was just a coincidence yeah the other component is 37:53 this on the tape there is a little clip of Brian playing the drums it's 37:59 September 22nd the day of Cassie's murder boom boom boom boom boom boom boom 38:03 he's getting it out his energy he gets up he has the camera probably 38:07 stationed on his dresser grabs the camera to turn it off and just as he 38:12 hit stop, the camera passes his television. What's on? The opening scene of 38:18 Scream. You see Drew Barrymore, Casey on the phone. It's almost like his hype song. 38:25 He is preparing for murder. Drums, the movie, and there's one other thing that 38:32 I want to point out. Slasher movies in general are these masked, voiceless
