SHOW NOTES
Coaching Youth Hoops with Coach Steve Collins and Coach Bill Flitter
Another one straight from the Coaching Youth Hoops Facebook group: what is the biggest character lesson you are trying to teach your players this season? The guys take it seriously, because as Coach Collins puts it, the life lessons taught through sports matter more than the sport itself. That only works if somebody connects the dots out loud. This episode is about how to do that on purpose instead of hoping it happens.
IN THIS EPISODE
01:34 Sponsor love for Coaching Youth Hoops. If we do not have it, you do not need it, or we will build it.
01:51 The Facebook group is where the topics come from. Search Coaching Youth Hoops under Groups and drop your question in.
02:23 Hey Sami is coming this fall. One tool that pulls all your youth sports into one place and texts you the updates, with nothing to install. Waitlist is open, and there is a version for parents and a version for coaches.
03:25 Today's question from the group, and the first answer that made the guys laugh: ignore the refs and play the game.
03:57 Why Coach Collins coached as long as he did. The life lessons outlast the wins.
04:15 Connect the dots or it does not count. Growth mindset, and learning more from failure than from acceptance.
04:30 The son who did not make the college team, and why that was probably the better outcome.
05:02 The first business that failed, and what came out of it.
05:50 Where sports came from. Learning to win, learning to lose, learning adversity.
06:00 The uncomfortable one: a mediocre coach is a life lesson too. Kids will have difficult teachers and difficult bosses. Walk them through it rather than yanking them out. Abuse is a different conversation entirely.
06:36 Be a family. Win and lose as one. Why the kid who missed the last shot did not lose the game by himself.
06:57 Being on time was never about the clock. It was about responsibility.
07:12 What Japan's teams do to their locker room after a match, and why that image sticks.
07:44 Leave it better than you found it. Pick up the Gatorade bottles, even the ones that were there before you.
08:14 Getting along with people you do not like. Player to player, not just player to coach. You will work with them someday, so learn it now.
09:13 Plan your character lessons the way you plan your drills. Pick three or four you will absolutely pass on this seaso
