This is a Spotlight on the Scriptures: John 14:8-9 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Philip wanted what Moses had—a glimpse of glory, a peek behind the curtain, a moment in the cleft of the rock. He longed to see the Father, to behold the majesty of the invisible God. But what Philip didn’t realize is that what Moses saw in part, Jesus came to reveal in full! Moses caught a shadow, a whisper, a passing glory. But Jesus said, “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father!”

Oh yes! Jesus is not just a prophet, not just a teacher, not just a miracle worker—he is God wrapped in flesh, the Word made flesh dwelling among us! He is the brightness of God’s glory and the express image of his person. He is the God-Man, heaven’s holiness walking in sandals, eternity speaking in parables, divinity weeping at Lazarus’ tomb.

So when Philip said, “Show us the Father,” Jesus didn’t rebuke him—he revealed him. “Have I been with you so long, and you still don’t know me?” Because in Christ, the invisible becomes visible. In Christ, the unknowable becomes knowable. In Christ, the untouchable becomes touchable. He is Emmanuel—God with us!

So don’t go looking for a mountaintop moment like Moses. Look to Calvary. Look to the empty tomb. Look to the throne where he now reigns. For in Jesus, the fullness of God dwells bodily. And when you see him—when you know him—you’ve seen the Father.
