Psalm Chapter 76 - To the chief Musician on Neginoth, A Psalm or Song of Asaph
Psalm 76: The Breaker of Weapons
There is something startling about how quickly this psalm dispatches the machinery of war. In a single line, the arrows of the bow, the shield, the sword, the battle itself — all shattered. Not by counter-force, not by a superior army, but by the rebuke of a God who did not need to raise his voice twice. Chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep, and the stouthearted wake to find their hands empty. We live in a world that takes its weapons very seriously, and rightly so — they do terrible things. But Asaph has glimpsed something stranger: that behind the clashing of nations sits a quieter power, and that when he arose to judgment, the earth feared, and was still. Even the wrath of man, he says, will somehow end up praising him — the remainder of wrath restrained, like a fire allowed to burn only so far and no farther. The peace of God is not the absence of trouble. It is the authority that breaks weapons in half.
