Psalm Chapter 79 - A Psalm of Asaph
Psalm 79: Sheep Among the Wreckage The scene this psalm describes is beyond bearing: the temple defiled, Jerusalem in heaps, the bodies of God's servants left for the birds of the heaven. Asaph does not soften it. He does not pivot too quickly toward hope. He lets the horror sit, and he asks the only question that matters in ruins: "How long, Lord?" And then, remarkably, at the end of all this grief, this line: "So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever." The sheep are still singing. Not because the pasture has been restored — it hasn't — but because the Shepherd is still the Shepherd, and they are still his. There is something holy about a people who can lament without losing their identity, who can ask hard questions without stopping their worship. The wreckage does not get the last word. The thanks of the scattered flock does. 00:00 The Heathen Come Into Thine Inheritance 01:00 How Long, Lord? 02:00 Sheep of Thy Pasture Will Give Thanks
