A Foretaste of Heaven – Communion with Christ: Practical Prayer w/ Deacon James Keating – Discerning Hearts Podcast
Episode 2: A Foretaste of Heaven – Communion with Christ: Practical Prayer with Deacon James Keating Deacon James Keating joins Kris McGregor to explore the importance of spiritual discernment and the interior life of prayer. Drawing upon Scripture, the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Deacon Keating explains that not every thought, feeling, or interior movement comes from God. The Christian must learn to distinguish the voice of the Holy Spirit from worldly influences, personal attachments, and spiritual deception. Through prayer, the sacraments, and the guidance of trusted spiritual companions, the soul gradually becomes more attentive to God's presence. Reflecting on Jesus as the model of prayer and Mary's response to divine love, he describes prayer as an invitation to share in Christ's intimate communion with the Father. Through Baptism, the Holy Trinity dwells within us, making the human heart a dwelling place where Christ continues His prayer to the Father. The conversation then turns to the Holy Spirit's role in guiding daily decisions, discerning one's vocation, and deepening our relationship with God. Deacon Keating explains that authentic Christian prayer develops from recognizing that we are personally loved and desired by God. As this awareness grows, prayer becomes less an obligation and more a natural expression of love, transforming how we approach both significant life choices and ordinary responsibilities. Rather than relying solely on personal judgment, Christians are invited to consult the indwelling Holy Spirit, asking which decisions will strengthen their fidelity to God's calling. This growing communion brings freedom, confidence, and a deeper longing to remain in Christ's presence. Deacon Keating concludes by encouraging listeners to have the courage to begin praying today, or, for those already established in prayer, to begin again with renewed trust in God's love. From the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraph 2567 "God calls man first. Man may forget his Creator or hide far from his face; he may run after idols or accuse the deity of having abandoned him; yet the living and true God tirelessly calls each person to that mysterious encounter known as prayer. In prayer, the faithful God's initiative of love always comes first; our own first step is always a response. As God gradually reveals himself and reveals man to himself, prayer appears as a reciprocal call, a covenant drama. Through words and actions, this drama engages the heart. It unfolds throughout the whole history of salvation." Check out Deacon Keating’s “Discerning Hearts” page You can find the book here.
