Should Christians Support the Death Penalty?

Does the Bible support capital punishment? What authority does God give civil government to administer justice, and how does the death penalty point us to the cross of Jesus Christ?

In this episode of Shadows to Substance, Pastor George Sayour examines the biblical case for capital punishment, the controversy surrounding the Fort Hood shooter, and whether executions should be publicly broadcast.

Drawing from Genesis 9, the Mosaic Law, Romans 13, and Acts 2, George explores the responsibility of civil magistrates, the importance of due process, and the distinction between church and state.

He also considers arguments from Gavin Ortlund, Doug Wilson, and the Pope before examining the ultimate theological question: How does the judgment deserved by sinners relate to Christ's substitutionary death?

The death penalty raises difficult questions about justice, mercy, government, and the gospel.
