But when the farmer finally witnessed what was taking them, his discovery would spark one of the strangest monster hunts in American folklore. According to the story, an enormous reptilian creature emerged from the South Skunk River, prompting hundreds of armed townspeople to confront the beast with rifles, revolvers, and eventually a Civil War-era cannon loaded with railroad spikes.
