Can You Really Trust Anyone Completely? [Day 13 - Shaar Habitachon]

What would it take for you to trust someone completely, without a single doubt, fear, or hesitation? In this enlightening thirteenth episode of the Shaar Habitachon Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe continues exploring Chapter Two of Rabbeinu Bachya Ibn Pakuda's timeless masterpiece, Chovos HaLevavos. Building on the first four essential qualities of a trustworthy provider—compassion, attentiveness, unlimited power, and perfect knowledge—Rabbi Wolbe introduces the final three qualities required for absolute Bitachon. We discover that true reliance demands more than knowing someone loves us or wants to help us. The one we trust must have cared for us throughout our entire existence, possess complete control over everything that happens to us, and demonstrate unlimited kindness even when we do not deserve it. Through the relatable example of a mother's extraordinary devotion to her child, Rabbi Wolbe illustrates just how difficult it is for any human being to fulfill these seven conditions. A mother may nurture her baby from the womb, provide constant care, and demonstrate tremendous love, yet even the most devoted parent cannot control every circumstance in a child's life or guarantee protection from every challenge. The sixth criterion teaches that genuine Bitachon requires reliance on a Provider who has exclusive control over our destiny, while the seventh reveals the importance of unwavering generosity—a kindness that extends even to those who have not earned it. Together, these qualities establish why absolute reliance cannot rest securely upon another human being, regardless of how loving, powerful, or dependable that person may seem. Finally, Rabbi Wolbe explains that when all seven qualities are present, complete trust becomes not merely reasonable but obligatory. Such reliance must influence every dimension of our lives: our public behavior, private thoughts, emotions, decisions, and actions. Most importantly, we must learn to accept the decisions of the One we trust, not simply tolerating difficult circumstances but believing that even what appears unfavorable is ultimately for our benefit. True Bitachon means trusting not only that Hashem can take care of us, but that His every decision is guided by perfect knowledge, limitless power, and unconditional kindness.
