NBA Draft Lottery Reaction! The Raptors will convey their 2024 first-rounder to San Antonio, and that's a good thing

In Episode 1635, Sean Woodley goes solo to react to Sunday's NBA Draft Lottery in which the Toronto Raptors fell two spots in the draft order and will thus convey the 8th-overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft to the San Antonio Spurs to close the book on the Jakob Poeltl trade. Off the top, Sean digs into why, considering the circumstanes, a fall to no. 8 was among the very best possible outcomes for the Raptors on lottery day, and why wiping the slate clean and moving forward with all of the team's picks in the Raptors' control is a small price to pay for a trade for Poeltl that was situationally misguided, but ultimately ends up being totally fine as a value proposition considering the overall weakness of the 2024 class of prospects. Next, Sean digs into what conveying the pick means for the Raptors this summer as it pertains to their cap flexibility -- which is expanded due to not having a high lottery rookie scale deal on their books -- and trade possibilities, which are far more wide open now that their picks in the long term are no longer encumbered. Lastly, Sean discusses one of his favourite downstream effects of conveying the pick this year, which is the lack of a debt hanging over the team going into next season, and the front office having no external factors dictating whether or not to go into the take. Whatever the results for next year, they'll be based on the merits of the play on the floor, and not tied to the need to tank hard in order to avoid sending a high pick in a deep draft to the Spurs in a year's time.
