Vanderbilt Football MUST Make a Statement in the 2026 Opener vs. Austin Peay

Vanderbilt Football is finally here—and the Commodores have a chance to make a statement in the 2026 season opener against Austin Peay.

This game is about more than simply getting a win. It's the first time the college football world gets to see Vanderbilt without Diego Pavia, and a strong performance could immediately push back against the “same old Vandy” narrative.

So what should Vanderbilt fans be watching?

The defense needs to show that the improvement we expected during Fall Camp is real—especially on third down. Vanderbilt struggled badly in third-down defense last season, and getting off the field consistently will be one of the biggest indicators of progress.

Then there's the quarterback battle. Jared Curtis and Blaze Berlowitz still need to create separation, and this game provides the first opportunity for everyone to see the competition in live action.

We also want to see offensive playmakers emerge, the offensive line establish itself, the run game control the matchup and Vanderbilt's depth make an impact in brutal heat.

Austin Peay is Step One.

Can Vanderbilt make a statement?
