7 Traits Separate the Truly Wise From Fools—Which Are YOU? (Day 116 - Orchos Tzaddikim | Silence 5)

In this Mussar Masterclass (Day 116) from Orchos Tzaddikim's Gate of Silence, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe teaches the seven hallmarks of a wise person (chacham) versus a fool (golem): a wise person speaks only after greater/older people, avoids interrupting, answers thoughtfully and in order, admits "I didn't hear" or "I don't know," and concedes truth—while a fool does the opposite.

Silence earns reward when listening to the wise, but becomes sinful when rooted in arrogance ("I know more"). Wise speech adds flavor like salt or a ruby in gold; weak or foolish words are ignored. If your advice is rejected, quietly share it through someone influential instead of persisting.

Idle chatter (sichah betelah) destroys concentration in prayer and fear of heaven—guarding speech like precious jewels in layered safes is essential. The episode concludes with an introduction to four categories (mockers, liars, flatterers, slanderers) who cannot receive the Divine Presence, promising deeper exploration next time.
