Big Ten Basketball Podcast: Illinois w/o Shannon | Purdue Rolls Maryland | More Recaps & Previews

In a dominating victory, No. 9 Illinois showcased their prowess, led by Marcus Domask's 32-point performance, cruising to a 96-66 win against Northwestern in a Big Ten showdown. Despite missing star player Terrance Shannon Jr., the Illini displayed exceptional teamwork and shooting prowess, never trailing in the game. The absence of Shannon due to suspension raised questions about Illinois' future performance and potential adjustments. Northwestern's efforts fell short, with Boo Buie's 20 points unable to offset their defensive struggles, leading Coach Chris Collins to admit to a tough defeat. Illinois, now 11-2, 2-0 in conference play, demonstrated their strength in the absence of Shannon. However, questions linger about the team's trajectory without their star player. Coach Brad Underwood acknowledged the challenge ahead, relying on the collective efforts of his team to fill the void left by Shannon. Their upcoming games against Northwestern and No. 1 Purdue will serve as tests for Illinois' adaptability and resilience. In another Big Ten matchup, No. 1 Purdue secured a commanding 67-53 victory over Maryland, halting the Terrapins' 19-game home winning streak. Zach Edey's impressive 23-point, 12-rebound performance highlighted Purdue's dominance. Maryland, despite defensive efforts, struggled with shooting, recording only 33% from the field. Meanwhile, No. 21 Wisconsin staged a strong second half to secure an 83-72 win over Iowa. Tyler Wahl's 19 points and Steven Crowl's double-double propelled the Badgers to their third consecutive victory. Wisconsin's ability to penetrate the paint and capitalize on free throws proved crucial, compensating for their lower 3-point shooting percentage. Additionally, Penn State's Coach Mike Rhoades expressed excitement about coaching against Michigan State, highlighting the challenges of playing away games for the Lions. The team aims to secure their first road win, with key players like Kanye Clary leading their offensive charge. As the Big Ten action continues, matchups between Ohio State and Rutgers, Minnesota versus Michigan, and other conference battles are set to unfold, showcasing intense competition and teams vying for dominance in one of college basketball's toughest conferences.
