Why Did Adam Have to Guard Eden? | The Enemy Was Already There

Why would a perfect Garden of Eden need someone to guard it?Genesis 2 says Adam was placed in Eden to work it and to “keep” it. The Hebrew word shamar carries the idea of guarding, watching, and protecting something entrusted to you.So what was Adam guarding against? This Sunday Seeds episode walks through Genesis 2–3, Adam’s role in Eden, the serpent’s strategy, the progression of temptation, original sin, ancestral sin, and the controversial serpent-seed interpretation. We also examine ancient Jewish traditions surrounding the serpent and ask whether Genesis assumes that rebellion had already begun in the unseen world before humanity fell.Everything leads back to Genesis 3:15 — the first announcement of hostility between the serpent and the woman, between his seed and her seed. That verse launches our next major Broadcasting Seeds arc:The Seed War.The breach happened in Eden. But God announced the counterattack on the very same day.
