Thousands of firefighters in action, Porto park plan criticised & get paid to move to the interior

On Wednesday 19th August 2026, Carl Munson’s Good Morning Portugal! news reports that more than 2,000 firefighters and 640 vehicles are battling ongoing wildfires across the country, with the fire in Torre de Moncorvo remaining the most intensive operation.



Other headlines include plans to install fences and set operating hours at Jardim do Morro in Porto (drawing criticism that it will lose its charm), state risks from public-private partnerships rising to €2.9 billion (Brisa accounting for over €1 billion), Portugal considering automatic workplace pensions, political reactions to a Social Security study, a PSD MP calling for continued health investment in the Algarve, and the Emprego Interior Mais programme offering grants of up to €3,759 for people moving to inland rural areas for work or business.
