What Was Waiting in the Darkness? | After Midnight

When he was five years old, he woke to find a tall, faceless figure standing silently outside his bedroom. His parents called it a nightmare.

As the years passed, the figure kept returning. Sometimes it stood in the hallway. Sometimes inside his room. It never spoke, never moved, and never seemed to do anything except watch. Eventually, he convinced himself it had to be a sleep disorder and spent the next two decades trying to explain away the impossible.

Then, one ordinary night, the woman he loved woke him with a question he'd never expected to hear.

"Who was standing beside the bed?"

She had never heard the story. She had never been told what he'd been seeing since childhood. Yet she described the same impossible figure... down to the last detail.
