Worship Isn't What You Think It Is
Almost everyone who follows Jesus has said it at some point: I wish I knew him better. I wish the connection were deeper. I wish I had more direction. And most people mean: if I just knew what he was up to in my life, everything would be different. So why do so few people get a clear answer? Why does it stay murky?
Because most people who follow Jesus don't understand what worship is actually for. The mechanics get all the attention — what style of music, whether you stand or sit, whether you feel something. But those are expressions of worship, not the purpose. The purpose of worship is to determine your relational position with Jesus. The best athletes aren't those with the most talent — they're the ones who know their assignment and execute it in relationship to everyone around them. The best followers of Jesus work the same way: the more clearly you understand your position in relation to him, the clearer every other question becomes.
Paul's letter to the Colossians lays this out as a spiritual equation. Worship produces an indwelling of the message of Jesus. That indwelling produces a transformed way of living — what Paul calls the peace of Christ ruling in your heart. Work it backward and the answer is clear: the peace and direction you're looking for don't begin with more information. They begin with a clearer position.

Discussion Questions
1. Has your faith ever felt murky or stagnant? Looking back, was there a connection between that season and your engagement with worship?
2. What does it mean to you personally that worship is about "relational position" rather than performance or style preference? Does that change how you think about it?
3. If the peace and direction you're looking for begin with worship, what's one thing you could do differently this week to clarify your position with Jesus?
