In 1987 the folklorist Thomas Bullard studied some three hundred abduction accounts and wrote that the Hill case defines the typical one, and by then Barney Hill had been dead for nearly eighteen years; after Betty died in 2004 she was buried beside him in Kingston, and her plaque carries the same line as his, "of The Interrupted Journey". The dress she wore that night is in a box in Durham with the Hills' papers, and the light the two of them watched over Route 3 rests on accounts the Air Force took down within days, while everything aboard the craft rests on memories recovered under hypnosis two and a half years later.
