EP 85: "Terror in Wichita" — The Story of 'Bind-Torture-Kill' Killer Dennis Rader (Part I)

Episode Summary

In this gripping two-part series, we pull back the curtain on the chilling dual life of Dennis Rader — known to the world as the BTK Killer. From his disturbingly ordinary upbringing to the cold, calculated murders that paralyzed Wichita for decades, Episode 85 of Camping Is Canceled is a deep dive into the mind of a man who lived two lives: family man by day, monster by night.

The episode opens with a firsthand account from Kerri Rawson — Dennis Rader’s daughter — who recounts the moment she discovered her father was the notorious serial killer who’d haunted her hometown and her nightmares. We then take listeners through the tragic, horrifying events of January 15, 1974, when the Otero family was brutally murdered in their own home. As we peel back each layer of Rader’s early years and mounting psychological obsessions, it becomes clear how someone so outwardly ordinary could orchestrate acts of pure evil.

Listeners will also hear the story of Kathy and Kevin Bright — a second attack just months later that nearly claimed two more lives — and how the psychological profile of BTK began to take shape in law enforcement circles.

⚠️ Content Warning: This episode contains graphic descriptions of violence, sexual assault, and crimes against children. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
