Matthew Farwell Faces WHAT Evidence From Sandra’s Home?!

The most difficult part of Matthew Farwell’s defense may be the duffel bag strap investigators recovered from Sandra Birchmore’s apartment. Federal prosecutors say DNA recovered from the strap matches him. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski to discuss the allegation and how jurors may weigh the competing explanations.

Prosecutors presented the strap as evidence in a federal case alleging Farwell killed Sandra and made the scene resemble a suicide. They also cite masked lobby video, the time of Sandra’s final phone activity, and deleted communications. Their account of her final days includes preparations for a baby shower and a nursing school entrance exam. The defense maintains that Farwell visited to end their relationship, then left, and that Sandra took her own life. A DNA result alone does not establish precisely when material was deposited or how a death occurred.

The conversation also turns to Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara’s dispute with Town Manager Thomas Calter. McNamara alleges that Calter demanded the destruction of a second Birchmore-related internal affairs report. Calter denies ordering its destruction. The second inquiry was initiated in 2024 and has been reported as concerning the department’s handling of a January 2021 warning call. Its findings have not been made public.

Eric examines what a prosecutor must establish beyond the presence of DNA, what the defense needs jurors to doubt, and whether the separate Stoughton dispute could become relevant to witness credibility. The unanswered questions extend beyond the courtroom, but each allegation still needs its own proof.
