Sandra Birchmore’s Strap DNA Needed WHAT From Farwell?!

The first investigation of Sandra Birchmore’s death is itself facing questions in federal court. A state lab found male DNA on a strap recovered from the apartment. Yet a later federal filing says investigators never collected Matthew Farwell’s DNA for comparison during that original investigation. State Police investigator Matthew Dunne described an unrecorded school-parking-lot interview of Farwell and the decision not to take notes. Separately, FBI Agent Heidi Kelsch read jurors text messages exchanged by Farwell and Sandra. Prosecutors say those communications undercut his earlier descriptions of their contact. Farwell denies the charges, and his attorneys maintain Sandra took her own life. Tony Brueski and criminal defense attorney Bob Motta examine the investigative decisions, the disputed theories, and the evidence jurors are being asked to evaluate.

A reference sample is simply DNA collected from a named person so scientists can compare it with an unknown profile. Without that sample, a lab finding on the strap could not answer whether Farwell contributed the DNA. That gap matters, but it does not by itself establish guilt or innocence. The competing stories of what happened to Sandra remain for the jury.
