Bryan Kohberger Told the Judge He Was Guilty for What Reason?
Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 to the Idaho student murders of Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves. Asked whether he was pleading guilty because he is guilty, he answered yes. His July 2026 petition claims he's innocent and that his lawyers coerced him into that plea. Jason Goldman, an attorney for the Kohberger family, calls this the beginning of a longer fight. Kohberger's 22-page motion to remove Judge Steven Hippler argues the judge showed bias in his sentencing comments. Citing State v. Beam, prosecutors say a judge has to form strong opinions to sentence someone. The night before that motion's October 15, 2026 hearing, Hippler cleared every date off the calendar. Does this fight go anywhere, or is it a man with four life sentences keeping people's attention on him? I put that to Defense Diaries host Bob Motta and Robin Dreeke, a retired FBI special agent.
