Sandra Birchmore Wanted Her Officer's Baby — Then the DNA Came Back

Sandra Birchmore wanted to have Matthew Farwell’s baby. She believed the officer who had access to her since childhood loved her. When DNA testing showed Farwell was not the biological father, what Sandra felt about that result tells psychotherapist Shavaun Scott everything about how deeply Sandra’s reality had been distorted. In this first segment of a four-part interview, Scott examines how Stoughton officers allegedly used their badges and a youth program to fill every gap in Sandra’s life. Sandra’s friend saw the danger instantly. Sandra could not. She drafted a message to Farwell’s wife that would have ended the silence — and never sent it. Scott, author of Nightbird, explains what separates the person inside the situation from the person outside it and why parents should understand what real warning signs look like in youth programs run by authority figures.
