The Trail Went Cold - Episode 506 - The Hinterkaifeck Murders, Part 1
March 31, 1922. Waidhofen, Germany. Four victims are bludgeoned to death with a mattock inside a barn at the Hinterkaifeck farmstead: 63-year old Andreas Gruber, his 72-year old wife Cazilia Gruber, their 35-year old daughter Viktoria Gabriel, and Viktoria’s seven-year old daughter, Cazilia Gabriel. Two additional victims - Viktoria’s two-year old son, Josef Gabriel, and the family’s 45-year old maid, Maria Baumgartner - are fatally bludgeoned inside the farmstead’s residence and the victims’ bodies are not discovered until four days later. Over the next several decades, a number of individuals are looked at as potential suspects, but there is not enough evidence to implicate any of them, so the crime has gone unsolved for an entire century. For this year’s final Halloween-themed episode, “The Trail Went Cold” is releasing a two-part series on the Hinterkaifeck Murders, which involves the deaths of six people and remains one of the most notorious cold cases in the history of Germany. Part Two of this series will be released next week. Special thanks to listener Wendy Newell for narrating the opening of this episode.
